A dear friend of mine once told me that she doesn't write letters (by the way she lives very far away) because they seem so self-centered. "I did this. I feel that." etc. While I can appreciate her view, I still think that letters are only superficially egotistical. While their content is all about self, their purpose is to reach out and create or maintain a connection to another.
Since we had that conversation, I have thought about my friend's opinion a lot. It seems that e-mail has taken the truth of her view to another level. Not only are they all about "me," but they are also a lazier form of communication. I can talk all about myself and not even bother to write out my thoughts long-hand, address and stamp an envelope, and make a trip to the post office. I can do it without ever leaving the comfort of my own home.
And today as I begin my live journal, it occurs to me that blogs are the next generation. I can write random ideas and simply abandon them. I don't even have to reach out at all by actually sending them to a specific person. I just hope that my friends care enough to take a look.
I can't wait to tell that friend to check me out!
